A LITTLE BACKGROUND

Hi, I’m Rory.

Software engineer. Reader. Occasional essayist.

I’m a staff software engineer based in New York City. Alongside building software, I enjoy reading and writing about philosophy and politics.

I studied computer science at Stanford University, where I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and earned a minor in philosophy.

I’ve also called San Francisco and Rio de Janeiro home. Those experiences show up in this collection: essays on Brazilian politics, reflections on ethics and religion, programming lessons in Portuguese, and stories about finding my way through complicated software.

About this corner of the internet

This site brings together my writing across engineering, philosophy, and politics. The archive preserves the original publication dates and text, including pieces written between 2014 and 2017.

There’s also a commonplace book: a collection of passages from philosophers and literary figures that have stayed with me.
